Abstract:
More than 60 years has passed from when it was shown that the answer to this question in its most basic form is in the negative. Extra information is required and many examples of this that allowed a unique reconstruction were worked out in the 20 years after the initial work of Borg, Krein and others. In this talk we will look at two new possibilities: adding a known mass to the string and re-measuring the frequencies; and by taking an intermediate nodal point and additionally measuring the frquencies of both segments of the string. We will show both uniqueness results and provide reconstructive methods.
