About

The School of Computer Science at Sun Yat-sen University is located on the East Campus of the Guangzhou University Town. Its predecessor is the Department of Computer Science, established in 1979 with approval from the Ministry of Education. After more than 40 years of development, the school has achieved remarkable progress in academic disciplines, talent cultivation, scientific research, and faculty building.

History

  • 1979

    Sun Yat-sen University established the Department of Computer Science.

  • 1989

    The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Economics formed the Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University.

  • 1994

    The Department of Computer Science was divided into two departments: "Scientific Computing and Computer Application" and "Computer Science."

  • 1997

    In 1996, Sun Yat-sen University reorganized the College of Information Science and Technology, transferring the Department of Computer Science and the Software Research Institute from Lingnan College to the College of Information Science and Technology, while merging the Department of Scientific Computing and Computer Application into the School of Mathematics and Computational Science.

  • 2001

    Sun Yat-sen University integrated the academic strengths of units such as the College of Information Science and Technology to establish the School of Software. In December of the same year, the School of Software was approved by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 35 exemplary software schools in China.

  • 2007

    Sun Yat-sen University established the Department of Automation within the College of Information Science and Technology. In February 2014, it was renamed the Department of Intelligent Science and Automation.

  • 2010

    Sun Yat-sen University officially inaugurated the National School of Confidentiality, becoming the third national school of confidentiality in China after Nanjing University and Harbin Engineering University.

  • 2012

    Focusing on the development of mobile internet applications, Sun Yat-sen University established the Mobile Information Engineering College.

  • 2013

    Sun Yat-sen University founded the first School of Supercomputing in China.

  • 2015

    In April, Sun Yat-sen University consolidated the strengths of the Department of Computer Science from the College of Information Science and Technology, the School of Software, the School of Supercomputing, and some faculty members from the computational mathematics direction in the School of Mathematics and Computational Science to form the School of Data Science and Computer Science.

  • 2015

    In October, the management authority of the Guangzhou Supercomputing Center was officially transferred to the School of Data Science and Computer Science at Sun Yat-sen University.

  • 2015

    In December, students from the former Mobile Information Engineering College were placed under the management of the School of Data Science and Computer Science, with some faculty members also transferring to work within the new college. Faculty from the former Intelligent Science and Automation Department of the College of Information Science and Technology also transferred to work within the School of Data Science and Computer Science.

  • 2016

    Sun Yat-sen University adjusted the supporting unit for the National School of Confidentiality to be the School of Data Science and Computer Science.

  • 2017

    Sun Yat-sen University established the Cybersecurity College.

  • 2020

    The School of Data Science and Computer Science was renamed the School of Computer Science.
